Weekly Science Article Report #1 - Period 1

The purpose of this assignment is to develop your ability to read and write about science.

The assignment:
Each week you will find an science related article that is interesting to you. It can be about any topic, not just whatever we are studying in class. Then you will write a report which has these three parts:
1) Citation: Here you will put the name of the article, the author, and where you found it (for example, the New York Times or Science News for Kids).
2) A brief summary: Here you will summarize the article in one or two sentences. This is to give your readers (including me) a sense of what you have read.
3) Reflection: This is the biggest part of your report. I am interested in your response to the article. Please address the following questions in your reflection:
a) What did you think about the article? Did you like it or not? Why?
b) What interested you or surprised you about the article?
c) What questions do you have about what you read? What would you like to know more about what you’ve read?

Click here to find tons of science articles.

Your report is due Friday here on the blog.

Dark matter 'bridge to nowhere' found in cosmic void

By: Rachel Courtland

http://space.newscientist.com/article/dn14730-dark-matter-bridge-to-nowhere-found-in-cosmic-void.html

The person doing this research said that more than a dozen galaxies seems to be lined up along a bridge of dark matter inside a region of nearly empty space. They think this bridge, later in life, can shed light on how small galaxies were formed in the early universe.
I thought this article was very interesting. I liked it a lot because I have never heard of anything like this before. It is very cool how people can get so interested in things and find out many cool facts about our world today.
Something that interested me very much from this article was when I read that galaxies in the universe are arranged in an odd structure that contains many holes, or voids. Another thing that I thought was interesting was that now, astronomers have found a total of 14 galaxies that appear to be part of a dark matter bridge.
Some questions that I have are:
• If this “Dark Matter Bridge” is researched and it leads somewhere, will it lead to further research of other space related things?
• Will a lot of space shuttles or satellites go up in space to investigate this “Dark Matter Bridge”?
• Did they find other small galaxies formed in the early universe?
I would like to know a lot more on this “Dark Matter Bridge” once it is investigated more and there are some interesting things about it. I would like to know what they saw when they looked at the “Dark Matter Bridge”.

Space ‘firefly’ Resembles to No Known Object
By Maggie McKee
(http://space.newscientist.com/article/dn14738-space-firefly-resembles-no-known-object.html)

Scientists have found an object in space that resembles a firefly. It brightened intensely and then faded back into obscurity over a period of about seven months, scientists are curious to see what unknown light is.

What my thought on this article is that it was very interesting and peculiar. It’s nice to learn something that is going on in space. And also I liked how the writer really tells you how much the scientists were curious and were questioning it. What I liked the most about it is that the scientists know so much about it and they have so many predictions on how this light is produced (or made) in space.

What interested me most about this article is that there is SO many things going on in space and this flashing light is only a specific thing that this article is focusing on. It gives you good and factual detail one by one.

The questions I have about what I’ve read is that,

1. Does the flashing light LOOK like a firefly?
2. How do scientists know how many times the light flashed?
3. How did they find this flashing object?

In this article it supplied so much detail on what the scientists knew, so the questions I asked are just basic questions on what they didn’t mention in the article. But overall the article was very good.

The article is from http://topics.nytimes.com the article was called Global Warming and it did not say who it was by. The article was talking about how the United Nations said that it was very likely that we had a big impact over global warming in the last 50 years and how the green house affect is necessary other wise the Earth would be too cold to live on it also said that global climate temperature will rise from 3.5 to 8 degrees Fahrenheit if the atmosphere reaches twice the level of 1750and that by the year 2100 sea levels will have risen from 7 to 23 inches. I think that this article was not that interesting because some of the things it said were really obvious like that humans very likely had something o do with global warming in the last 50 years. But some of the things definitely got my attention. Some things that definitely surprised me was that by the year 2100 sea levels could rise up to almost 2 feet and that the global temperature could rise from 3.5 to 8 degrees. One question that I have is over how long will it take for the temp rise from 3.5 to 8 degrees.

Arctic Ocean Ice Retreats Less Than Last Year
By Andrew C. Revkin The New York times

The Atlantic ocean is losing a quite bit of ice and its not going so good for the animals that live in the arctic! From this summer its 33% less than the average extent. This is caused from global warming and green house gases.
I liked the article but I don’t like what its addressing to us, we as a nation should not let this happen to our earth I mean look what the animals are going through! I think that the thing that surprised me the most was that the ice is down 33% than the average extent.
My questions are: why isn’t the whole world trying to help this and change the arctic and everywhere else? How can we sit here listening to this stuff that will change our earth forever in a bad way?

The Big-Bang Machine

By: Theunis Bates

This article was about a particle accelerator that was built by the CERN this machine was built to simulate the big bang. The machine would shoot two protons at each other from a long distance at 99.99991 percent of the speed of light, they would then circle around each other. The scientists would use magnets to make them collide 600 times. They would be able to use this machine to test the big bang theory and see what matter existed at the time.

I thought this was interesting because so many people were concerned about the outcome of this project. one of the possible scenarios was that a worm hole could open up. I also like things that explode!

My questions are…

• Could this destroy our planet?
• What kinds of particles have they tested?
• What info have they gathered ?
• Are there any other possible outcomes?

Norway joins fight to save Amazon
By http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7621179.stm

2. Norway has given 1billon dollars to a new international fund to help Brazil protect the Amazon rainforest. Brazil would like to raise 21 billon dollars to help protect the Amazon.
3a. I think that Norway is doing a good job helping the Amazon by donating 1 billon dollars to the foundation. Yes I did like it because it shows that some people actually care about the rainforest.
3b. The biggest thing that surprised me was that Norway donated 1 billon dollars to the foundation.
3c. I don’t really have any question about the article because they’re doing a good thing and that’s what matters most.
*But maybe some question I would have would be why are they starting it now and not a couple years ago?
* Shouldn’t the whole world be helping this problem and not just Norway and Brazil?

Seabird chicks "killed over food"

By: kate ash brook

http://bbcnhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/7619717.stmews.com

kate ashbrook did research on why sea birds are eating there chicks enstead of fish
they found out that the climate is changing and the type of fish they eat arent there anymore and the fish there are low on energy and smaller then the fish are used to.
now the seabirds are starting to eat there chicks because they arent getting enough food them selvs so they are starting to eat there chicks to stay alive.
1. iliked it because it shows that climate effects how animals change to things.
2.it suprised me that these birds are eating there chicks enstead of the fish.
3why dont the birds follow the fish.

http://www.trosch.org/lif/baby-eat.html: website I got the information from

Did you here the article about the Chinese people eating fetuses? It sounds disgusting, but true. One day a news reporter from America went to find out if the rumor was true, that Chinese people eat fetuses. When the reporter went to the hospital to ask the doctor some questions he found out every thing he needed to know. The doctor showed him a jar the size of a fist full of fetuses! Dr. Zou Qin says that she ate over 100 fetuses and she makes it a meal for her and her family. It was true that the Chinese people do eat fetuses. How the Chinese people like to eat healthy they say that the fetus is so pure of healthy nutrients that it’s a waste not to eat them. In china over 7 and 14 million abortions are performed in china per year. Killing the babies soon means there are more old people than younger ones. China is becoming top-heavy in elderly people. Killing the old ones will be the next step. The Chinese people like it when male fetuses are aborted because they say that the males fetuses are more purified than the females fetuses. They love eating the fetuses when it’s made into soup. The whole reason the Chinese even thought of this was because how you can’t have more than 2 children in China they thought how there are many people that have 2 babies lets do some thing else with them then just get rid of them. Weather the parents liked it or not they needed to let the doctors do what they wanted with the fetuses.
My thought on this whole thing is that it’s very disgusting. I don’t think it’s fair that the Chinese couples can’t have more than 2 children and if they do that there punishment is to abort their baby. Out of what I read from the article I’m starting to think that the Chinese people area bit cruel. I know that they like to be very healthy but now I think that they have gone too far.

1) Citation: Super massive black hole says sayonara!
By Ron Cowen
From http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/31606/title/Supermassive_black_hole_says_sayonara

2)Scientists believe that a super massive black hole came shooting out of its own galaxy. Its also supposedly 2 black hole merged together, which gave off a a burst of gravitational radiation. Making it shoot out into the intergalactic space.\

3) A. I think this article was awesome in my opinion, because the fact that 2 black holes can actually merge together and then be the size of several hundred million suns is cool.
B. I think what surprised me the most was how the recoil of the fusion just propelled it so fast out of its galaxy.
C. Which galaxy?
When was this spotted?
Please follow this story. Also the author was not really honest in his first few sentences. Because in the 8th paragraph he mentions the its still in the galaxy when in the first few sentences he said it roams the intergalactic space.

The Great Depression
http://en.wikipedai.org/wike/great_depression
?
The Great Depression was an economic downturn that was spread worldwide. It started in most places in 1929, ending in different countries during the 1930s. It was the most important and the largest economic depression in world history. The Great Depression started in the US when the stock market crashed on October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday. It is believed that the Second World War’s economy helped the US to get out of the Depression. A lot of people are afraid that we may be going into another Depression. We got out of the last Depression by going to war, but how are we going to get out of it now, when we are already in a war.

1.A Maybe Planet, Orbiting Its Maybe Sun

By: Dennis Overbye

2.this article is about a possible planet that is around 7-12 times as massive as Jupiter that scientists believe orbits a sun like star.

3A.I liked all the info that the writer gave to the reader, it really helped to understand what they were talking about by having pictures, and explaining the distances and sizes.

B.I think it is very interesting that there could possibly be a new planet out there along with a new sun.

c. I would really like to know if the so called planet is an actual planet.

Title: Healing Honey
Author: Emily Sohn
Found: Science News For Kids

A brief summary: This article talked about how cough medicines can cause dangerous side affects for young children. It also talked hot the thick consistency probably helps coat and sooth the throat.

Reflection: I thought this article was very intresting because I would of never thought that honey would hekp sooth the throat and help your cough. I also thought it was intresting because it said that they had an eperiment with honey and one with cough medicine and the experiment showed that the kids who took honey slept better than the kids who took cough medicine.

Google and GE in energy deal
By Maggie Shiels
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7622347.stm

The article I read is about how Google is teaming up with GE (green electric) to promote clean energy. They are trying to persuade politicians to push for major policy changes in energy. GE and Google plan to work on technologies that will convert geothermal power into electricity. I really enjoyed reading the article. I think it is really interesting that companies are starting to realize that we need to stop global warming now because time is running out. In the article it shared an interview they had. Both companies said that enough is not being done to do with the environment. It interested me that a big company like Google is taking on this topic. In the article I wanted to know more about how they were going to transfer the energy and how everything was going to work. What I didn’t understand was how they were going to promote the energy?
