Why do we need a genetic code?

We need a genetic code. We need it because the genetic material inside of it is turned into proteins by living cells. Without a genetic code, our cells would not make proteins and without proteins our cells would not be able to function.

8. What impact do mutations actually have?

Well, mutations can be good and bad. One kind of mutation is a disease. These are ussually bad. Some mutations are good. For example, a long, long, long, long time ago, there were only single celled organisms. These, as you know, are not very complex organisms. One day, or over a period of time, one of these organisms was created by mitosis. It was spawned with a defect, but not really a defect, it was just a mutation. This organism was more efficient than other organisms of its kind, and when it mated the mutation was passed from generation to generation. Soon all of the organisms were like the first mutated one. More and more mutations happned in the organisms, until, they weren't just single celled any more. They had organs and limbs, senses and size. They were the worlds first animals. Evolution carries on this way.
The bad mutations (diseases) are usually passed down through the family, or when somthing goes wrong during mitosis. Somtimes, these mutations have a huge impact on people.

As you can see, mutations can help or hinder all life on this planet. Mutations are a BIG part of everything

#10 are all mutations passed from parent to offspring.
No, because not all mutation happen on the x or y chromosomes so if they don't happen on the x or y chromosomes which are the sex cells then the mutation wont be passed on
