Weekly Science Article Report #4 - Period 4

This week you have your next weekly science article report to do.

For a reminder, here's what to do for this assignment:
1) Citation: Here you will put the name of the article, the author, and where you found it (for example, the New York Times or Science News for Kids).
2) A brief summary: Here you will summarize the article in one or two sentences. This is to give your readers (including me) a sense of what you have read.
3) Reflection: This is the biggest part of your report. I am interested in your response to the article. Please address the following questions in your reflection:
a) What did you think about the article? Did you like it or not? Why?
b) What interested you or surprised you about the article?
c) What questions do you have about what you read? What would you like to know more about what you’ve read?

Your report is due Friday here on the blog.

By Monday, you will post comments on the work of three other students. Your comments should include:
1) One thing you appreciated/liked about their report - something you think they did well.
2) One suggestion you have for how they might improve their work in the future.

WHY DO TURTLES HAVE SHELLS?

China has found fossils that show animals around 220 million years ago with only half a shell(only the bottom shell). Thithink that this was an even earlier stage of a turtle. These dicoveries are helping the scientists figure out the route of how the turtles came to have their shells. The animal was most likely to be aquatic and it has teeth insted of a beak like other early turtles.
The turtles in the past were found to have bony plates on their skin wich might have evolved into a shell. But the main thing that scientist think is skelatal changesover time.
The changes found in turtle changes amaze me. The article said that turtles didn’t just come to have shells. I always thought that they just had them and they were just always there. I think hat the steps to the process are going to be more clear once more discoveries are made and the steps to the process is finalized.

The article information is found from the newyorktimes.com website.

Moon, Venus, Jupiter form smiley
By Alcuin Papa
http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/nation/view/20081202-175737/Moon-Venus-Jupiter-form-smiley

In this article it explains what happened last night. When you looked into the sky last night you would have seen a picture of a crescent moon and two stars under it. The two stars were really the planets Jupiter and Venus. In the Europe and America the face was a frown every where in the southern hemp heir it was a smiley face. The was amazing because this sight is very rare to be seen. This normally happens in the morning but is possible to be seen at night. This event also for a brief moment happened last February and is predicted to happen again next January. Also If you want to see a meteor shower there will be one December 13 of this month.

I really enjoyed the article very much. It was amazing because it is such a rare sight I wanted to know more. I wonder though why is the sight so rare? I was first informed of this by my club leader in a club I am in in Yorktown.

1.) Title: ‘Time-bending drug’ for jet lag
Author: not mentioned
Where I Found It: BBC News
2.) A Brief Summary: I read an article about a pill experts made for jet-lagged people. The pill has not been “perfected” yet, but it does work on certain people.
3.) Reflection: I thought the article was about an interesting topic. I thought it was very cool that they found a pill that could cure jet-lagged people. I liked the topic the article was about but I did not like the way it was written. I did not understand a lot of the words they choose to use. I thought they could explain a simple topic easier so readers could understand it. Nothing that the article said surprised me but I wonder what the author was talking about when they said something about a dummy pill? If I knew what they did with the dummy pill I would be more interested.

http://www.thetechherald.com/article.php/200838/2079/Discovery-of-fish-with-fingers-gives-evolution-new-twist

I read an article about how scientists from Sweden are discovering a new fish (Panderichthys) that lived more than 385 million years ago. The scientists said that they believed that the first creatures to develop fingers were tetrapods, but with this fish they weren’t so sure. They think that they saw a finger structure in the fins of this fish.
I really liked this article. I liked everything about it. The information intrigued me. I also liked how there were quotes from people in the article and how the article was short and sweet, but it got right to the point. I was really surprised that they were discovering a creature now from 385 million years ago. I was really interested at the way they were stating what they used to think and what they think now, and why they think it. I would like to know how the scientists discovered this if the fish has been long gone for so many years. I would also really like to see a real picture of the fish even though there isn’t really a possible way.

pretty pink prince- I think that your article was on an interesting topic. I really liked how you explained the topic. I think that you could have checked your grammar and spelling a little bit better though. I also think that you could focus more on your reflection next time.

super awesome kid14- I liked your choice of topic. I thought that it was cool how you talked about something from a long time ago. I thought that you could check your spelling a little bit better though because some words were not spaced and some were spelled wrong.

ryley clyde- I liked how you reflected a lot about what you read. I also liked how you took time to say why you didn’t like your article. I think that you could have not repeated what you said as much as you did. I think that in your summary you could have been a little bit more clear on what you were talking about.

Harbor seals decline alarming
By James Morgan
BBC NEWS
The article talks about how the populations of harbor or otherwise known as common seals are rapidly declining from the shores of northern Europe. The place that is getting hit the worse is Scotland. I like the article it wasn’t really long and boring like some articles. It also didn’t have too many numbers which makes it really boring. What surprised me about the article was that it wasn’t only the seal population that was on the decline but also the eel population. What I didn’t understand at first was that it was in Europe I thought that it was somewhere like San Francisco.

White Fuzzy Mold Kills

The new discovered white fuzzy mold is known to kill bats in the northeastern part of the United States. This mold is killing 80 out of 100 bats die once the mold gets to the cave. The mold is called it the white-nose syndrome. The mold comes out only hibernation season.
I liked this article because I never knew that there is a mold that is so deadly and it is weird that it is known to kill bats. I wonder if this mold kills other animals not just bats.

A Ball on the Seafloor Casts Doubt on Views of How Life Diversified
By Henry Fountain
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/02/science/02obtrack.html?ref=science

In the summer of 2007 during an expedition to the Bahamas. A team of scientists made a weird discovery that on the sea floor was a ball, a little bigger then a golf ball, that was covered in mud. The scientists discovered that these balls, which were about an inch in diameter, appeared to have left tracks on the seafloor, as if they were rolling slowly under the sea, all by themselves! A giant amoeba, with a water-filled center that helps it maintain its spherical shape. And the scientists say the creature does actually roll! The scientists realized that its tracks were very similar to grooves found in seafloor fossils that dated back more than 550 million years! So the rolling golf ball casted doubts on scientists understanding of how life on Earth all started.
I think that it is pretty amazing that an amoeba that is filled with water just rolls around making grooves on the sea floor. It might have ruined the scientists theory's but, scientists might just have come a little closer to really finding out how the earth all started.
I was very surprised that water filled amoeba rolls around on the sea floor making grooves in the ground.

World's Oldest Marijuana
By Jennifer Viegas
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28034925/

I read an article about how some people found two pounds of marijuana in a 2,700 year old grave in the Gobi Desert. It said that the people who owned the marijuana were using it for clothing, rope, and "getting high". But the finders are not sure of this because no pipes or devices associated with smoking were found in the grave. They also found rare, valuable item such as a make-up bag, bridles, pots, archery equipment and a kongou harp.
Scientists proved that due to the decomposition of the millennia in the plant, no one could fell its effects today.

The article was interesting and it just so happened to be that marijuana is illegal in the US.
The article was interesting because it was so random because when you die and want to be buried with stuff that represent you, why would someone choose marijuana?

Gangsta Joe,
It is cool how there is a white fuzzy mold can kill bats. Is there something in the mold that only effects bats?
How does that mold form and not other ones?
You did a good job explaining and your questions, but maybe next time, you should try to give a little more description. But otherwise, good job.

Smart fabric glows in response to allergens

By Eric Bland

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28035966

Scientists are developing a shirt that could tell the person who is wearing it of allergens. It is being developed at the University of Michigan. The scientists created the shirt by dipping cotton fibers into a vat filled with water mixed with a conductive polymer and carbon nanotubes. The cotton fiber joined with the nanotubes and stayed combined when dry. The thread is able to conduct electricity almost like metallic wires, so they were able to power a light. Carbon nanotubes are made of pure carbon atoms. They are arranged in a hexagonal pattern.

I thought this article was well written and very descriptive. I thought this article was very interesting. I thought was really amazing because the cotton could detect blood so soldiers in Iraq could be sent help with out calling for help. The only thing I did not like was the way the write described things. He didn’t make it easy for younger readers. He used long complicated words that most children wouldn’t know.

NASA delays Mars mission to 2011
By ALICIA CHANG
http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D94S1NTO0.htm

NASA delayed their big launch and it was already over budget. The Mars Science laboratory scheduled the take off for next year but now got postponed till 2011. NASA administrator Michael Griffin said that flying the space ship in 2009 was too much risk. This is then second time NASA has to postpone a mars mission.
I liked this article because when I found it I was drawn to the title. I think that it is interesting to know that NASA postponed another mission to mars. I just wonder why it would have been a big risk to send it in 2009 anyway.

How do dirty bombs work?

In this article it explained how a dirty bomb operates. First of all a dirty bomb is a small circle with a fuse at the end. It is commonly used by terrorists, because it is cheap and deadly.

When a dirty bomb's fuse is lit and it explodes it lets out a good amount of radiation. It isn't nearly as powerful as a nuclear but the sound of it is just as menacing. When the gas spreads you have to be very careful because if you breath any of it in it could knock electrons of an atom making it an ion which can cause chemical reactions in your body.

There are a lot of aspects to this article but fear is a big one for me. If these bombs are so easy to use and create then are we in trouble? It didn't say this in the article but the amount of radiation could cause more cancer. I like all the technology, but do we have so much towards weapons that it could hurt us?

The article I read was called New Flying Reptile Species Found. There was no author named. I found this article on BBC news.

This article was about how scientists found a new prehistoric species of flying reptiles in Brazil.

I liked this article very much because it showed that there are so many new things yet to be discovered. What surprised me was that the species like this one that were found before it were found in China and this one was found in Brazil. I was very also very surprised that this species, which is called Lacusovagus, was also smaller than the ones like it that were found. What I am wondering is if there are any other species like this one yet to be discovered in the same area.

Does exercise really keep us healthy
By Gina Kolata
New York Times

The article was mainly about how exercise (like walking and lifting weights) may get the momentum up and give you muscles does not really lose you calories.

A) I liked it because it gave me a lot of useful facts and gave me a different view about walking and stuff like that.

B) About how lifting weights does not lose you calories that shocked me. Some football players get more calories than they lose.

C) What can lose you calories like what do you have to do to lose them.

super awesome kid14, I liked the article that you read and I thought it was very interesting. I agree, I didn't think that turtles didn't come to have shells. Something you could improve on is your spelling.

pretty pink prince, I loved the article you choose to write about. I'm not that into stars and planets but I found it very interesting that those two bright stars in the sky next to the moon were actually Venus and Jupiter. By the way, when I was riding to an indoor soccer game that night, I pointed at the moon with the two bright stars next to it twice because I thought the stars looked extra big and bright. I guess I was right about those two "stars" (Venus and Jupiter)

ANYONE WHO READ MY ARTICLE. . .
I apologize for my spelling and grammar errors I posted the non-edited version by accident and my keyboard is very stiff and is hard to get all the letters on the page.

DEAR ABC123DEF456,

I liked your article a lot mainly because I didn’t know that you could use marijuana for so many different things like clothing and rope I always thought it was just for drinking. I never thought that they had marijuana so long ago either. But I have some questions that are really bugging me, how did they find the grave, was it in a grave yard, did they have grave yards? Even with grave yards why would they dig it up and look inside it? Plus how did they know that there we’re things in that grave? Did they just dig up them all?

DEAR GANGSTA JOE,

Gangsta joe your article was very informative, I liked how you made it strait to the point, I was wondering the same thing as you did, does it kill other animals. Maybe it kills bats because of their habbitat, caves. I never thought mold could be so deadly, whenever I think of mold I think of blue cheese. He He.

DEAR AJAX555,
ajax555 your article intrested me because I think you can learn so much from other things. This new fish probobally isn’t very new if it lived 385 million years ago, but it is new to us he he. I would love to see a picture too if I could. But in a skelaton that has a finger structure means there could’ve possibly been a fish years and years ago with fingers. A fish with fingers imagine that.

New Flying Reptile Species Found
Author not stated
BBC NEWS

My article is about how there has been a new species of flying reptile. This new species is called Lacusovagus meaning lake wanderer. I actually liked this article a lot. On the page of articles it wasn’t the biggest and brightest one, but for some reason it jumped out to me. I’m also really interested in those kinds of stories. It was also fun to read and like other stories it wasn’t really long and got straight to the point. It showed a picture of what scientists thought that the Lacusovagus might look like. To me it looked like a dinosaur. I do have some questions about my article because some things in it weren’t quite clear enough. My first question is if it is a dinosaur and my next question is if it’s not is it still living?

Anonymous said...

Michael-Phelps-Phan, you wrote your reflection really well. I could relate to how you feel about the articles that go on forever and never get to the point. It really interested me that the "Lacusovagus" looked like a dinasour in the picture that was in the article. Maybe you could have explained what the picture looked like so the reader could get a clear image in their head. Other then that, well written response.

I read an article called Giant Wind Farm Gets the Go-Ahead, from BBC News. It was about the proposal for a wind farm off the shore of Wales. I liked the article. I thought it was really cool that they were building a wind farm, because I like renewable energy sources. It surprised me that the farm would be able to provide electricity for 680,000 homes. One question I have is; when will the farm be set up? Another question I have is; why did they choose wind energy and not solar or hydro energy?

I thought you did your reflection really well. Maybe next time you can put a little more of your opinion into the reflection. Also think about choosing an article with less big words, which may be easier to read and understand.

killerinchworm22

I thought you picked a really interesting article to read. Maybe next time you should double check your grammar.

The Skinless Wonder

I thought that you really put your opinion into your reflection. I am wondering why the seals are disappearing. Make sure you include all the important facts next time.

ARTICLE- Sunshine And Air:The Gas Of The Future?
BY: Matthew Knight
WEBSITE FOUND IN: WWW.CNN/tech/science.com

The article I read, was about how air powered car. How it works is that they use compressed air, and store it into a carbon-fiber tank then let the air out. This increases the drivers engine pistons the same way Petrol gases do. There are three different models of this vehicle, including: the OneCAT the CityCAT, and the AirPod. India's biggest car maker (Tata motors, U.S. start up, have both signed deals with MDI and they hope to have these vehicles on the road by 2010. The U.S. starting price will start at $18,00.

I chose this article because I thought it was interesting and a good thing to know about right now do to all of the global warming that's going on.

Pretty pink prince:
I like how you explained most of the article and how you told us about the meteor shower on the 13th.

Gansta Joe: I think that your article is interesting and I like how you put in how it only kills a certain kind of animal, a bat.

Ryley Clyde:
I think you did well in your summary but could have put a little more in it.

I like how you explained the article shot and sweet. But next time you may want to put more paragraphs in it.

Madnerd 44

I like how you incorporated what we are learning in class with your article. Though maybe you could explain the bomb more like how it works and what it looks like.

Michael_Phelps_Phan

I like the article. I am a fan of dinosaurs and I now dinosaur names have meanings does the lacusovagus name have any meanings.

Your article was very well written. This new fish isn’t very new if it lived over 300 million years ago. Iam surprised that a fish that is over 300 millin years old just got discovered now.

super awesome kid14

Your topic is very intresting. i think that it is cool that turtles's didn't always have shells

Anonymous said...

Pretty pink prince – Your article was interesting and even though I don’t like astronomy I loved this article. Your summary was just long enough to inform me on the article but not so long that you repeated information. Your summary was very good. The only thing that was very minor was that you had 2 typos. I do have 2 questions for you. One question for you was what club are you in that told you about this.

Ryley Clyde- Your reflection is descriptive I understand what you are saying. The topic was not very interesting to me but you made it so the reader would not loose focus. The only thing was your summary could have had some more details or information.

The Skinless wonder- I liked the topic of your science article. I was also surprised by reading your reflection that eel population is declining. Most people just cared about seals but they don’t care about other wildlife like eels. I like how you said what bores you which is helpful for me to make sure my summaries and reflections pleasing for everyone to read and learn from them.

I really liked your report. It was really easy to read and I thought you did a very good job. I think you should read over your work before you post it because there were some things spelt wrong and there were a few grammar issues. Other than that it was a very good response.

gansta joe:
I thought your report was really interesting. I could tell that you had actually thought about what you were saying and you didn’t just write some random stuff. There were some parts in your response where it didn’t really make sense because there were random words that shouldn’t have been there. Maybe if you read over your response before you post it, it might be more understandable.

abc123def456:
I thought your response was really good. I liked the questions you asked because they showed that you understood the article and you were interested in learning more about the topic. There were some things in your article at the end that needed editing so maybe next time you can improve that.

Ryley Clyde:I really enjoyed reading your post. I liked how you you spent the bulk of the post telling how you felt about the article not just summarizing it.

Gmoser:I thought your post was very good because you really gave your opinion about the article. I also thought your topic choice was very cool.

Gangstajoe:I thought that your post you gave a lot of information. You kept it short but full of information. I think that you could have spent a little more time on the reflection.

CurlyLocks123- I really liked your post. It was a great summary of your whole article, and but you didn’t really write how you felt about it and it kinda seemed like you were just spilling out facts.

30 degre burnes = mcsquare- Your post was really neat and I could tell you thought a lot about what you were writing, but you could have said a little more about what the article was about.

Killerinchworm22- I did the same story as you and it was cool to see what other people had to say about it. But you could have written more about what the article was about.
