Weekly Science Article Report #5 - Period 4

This week you have your next weekly science article report to do.

For a reminder, here's what to do for this assignment:
1) Citation: Here you will put the name of the article, the author, and where you found it (for example, the New York Times or Science News for Kids).
2) A brief summary: Here you will summarize the article in one or two sentences. This is to give your readers (including me) a sense of what you have read.
3) Reflection: This is the biggest part of your report. I am interested in your response to the article. Please address the following questions in your reflection:
a) What did you think about the article? Did you like it or not? Why?
b) What interested you or surprised you about the article?
c) What questions do you have about what you read? What would you like to know more about what you’ve read?

Your report is due Friday here on the blog.

By Monday, you will post comments on the work of three other students. Your comments should include:
1) One thing you appreciated/liked about their report - something you think they did well.
2) One suggestion you have for how they might improve their work in the future.

Japan Sells Icelandic Whale Meat
Richard black
BBC NEWS
This article is talking about how there has been tons of whale meat being hunted and brought into Japan. They are hunting fin whale which is classified as endangered it is said that two hundred a year would not affect the 30,000 some population. I was utterly shocked by this remark because I thought that whaling was illegal in places other than the United States of America. I liked it because it gave opinions from both sides of the story. My only question was that they kept mentioning this thing called the International Trade of Endangered Species.

Vaccine And Drug Research Aimed At Ticks And Mosquitoes To Prevent Disease Transmission
By:does not state
found: sciencedaily.com

This article is about how researchers are trying to figure out different ways to kill vector (ticks, sand flies and mosquitoes) prematurely before they spread their deadly diseases. Researchers came to the conclusion that they would have to reduce the lifespan of the vector and to make blood meals from humans lethal to mosquitoes so they die before they can transmit a disease.

I really liked the aricle and think that it was very factual and well written. It also seems like it took who ever conducted the information a long time because it was a very vast subject to research upon. Plus, they gathered a large amount of information, so I conclude that they worked hard while doing tests.

What surprised me was everything! I didn't know that people could dig so deep in such a vast topic. I also didnt think that instead of getting a vaccine to prevent becoming ill, you could kill the source.

I would like to know more about how they concluded all this research and how they possibly tested it.

Violent Video Game Feed Aggression In Kids In Japan And U.S.
By: Doesn't Say
Found: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/11/081103180252.htm

I read an article on how scientists at the Center for the Study of Violence, found that children playing violent video games starting at the age of 9, have a casual risk of being a lot more aggressive in the school years. But this does not create school shooters, it just creates more aggressive reactions when bumped in the hallway.

The article is very interesting. But I don't recommend reading the whole thing because they bury you with big words. I sort of liked the article because it was interesting how they figured out all of this stuff when we are clueless to the violent videogame theory.

Title: Half Man Half Tree
Author: not given
Where It Was Found: http://www.discoverychannel.co.uk/web/my-shocking-story/previous-episodes/half-man-half-tree/
Summary: My article is about a thirty two year old man who is half tree and half man. His feet and hands are covered in branches and the rest of his body is covered in welts.
Reflection: I liked the article I read. The title of it caught my eye and drew me to it. I thought it was very interesting how Dede made a living off of his tree condition by being in a circus (freak show.) Something that surprised me about the article is that he has two kids. How does he be a good dad to them when he has such a life changing disease? I would like to know if or when they create a cure for Dede’s disease.

Progression Of Retinal Disease Linked To Cell Starvation
No Author
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/12/081208203911.htm

As rods disappear, the structure of the retina breaks down. This might disrupt the connections between the cones and their source of nutrients. The untrained eye cannot distinguish between the two types of cells, which grow side-by-side. Cone death always began after the major phase of rod death. Active in bright light, cones allow us to perceive color and fine details. A cone stack is half the height of a rod stack. Stacks emanating from both types of cells get clustered together, like Oreos on a plate. The entire plate gets covered in "plastic," with the flexible plastic reaching down to touch each stack. In the eye, this plastic consists of a giant retinal pigment (RPE) cell, which supplies nutrients to the rods and cones on its plate.
I think this article was very interesting because they found a disease in the eye. I wonder how they found this disease in the eye. How did they find this disease and what tools did they use?

Skinless Wonder,
I liked your reflection because it showed your opinions. Also, I agree with you on that I like articles that give opinions from both sides of the story too. Maybe you could elaborate on why you liked the article so much. Other than that good job.

Magentaorocks,
Your topic was really cool because I've had lime disease many times and I once had croncic lime disease. You did a really good job on explaining how the article was well written. Something you could improve on is why you liked the topic, you explained about the article being well written but I want to know why you choose the topic in the first place.

abc123def456
I think it's very interesting how one violence video game can take an affect on how you act in your daily life. I found that your opinion was very direct and told it how-it- is. Something you could improve on is including a few questions that you might have wanted to ask.

Why do scorpios get more athsma?

This all depends on when your born. Of course it’s not only scorpios have athsma but more of them have it because of the allergens in the air at the time they are born. The main allergens are pollen, dust or dust-mites, animal dander, mold, cigarettes, air pollution, viruses and cold air.
The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine is reporting that the children born in the fall have a 30% more chance of getting asthma than others. This is based on children in Tennessee.
Children about 4 months of age and born in the fall are being exposed to the outside weather around this time of age. This is right in the middle of cold and flu season so young children’s lungs are developing still at this time, and still need to develop a strong immune system.
Athsma can also be genetic and family members have this condition also. But athsma mainly deals with allergies and what is in the air.
I’ve always thought that athsma only dealt with your own personal allergies and your families genetics. But now I realize that as a child you can get athsma without anyone knowing at the time. I happen to have athsma and I am born in the summer. But I know I have it because of my allergies and I never realized that it gets worse during the fall.

Black hole confirmed in Milky Way
By Pallab Ghosh
Science correspondent, BBC News
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7774287.stm

This article was about how there is a black hole in the Milky Way galaxy. For those of you who don’t know what galaxy we are in. We are in the Milky Way. The black hole was discovered by German astronomers in Chile .The black hole is very hard for anything to escape out of. Even light can’t escape out of one.
I’m wondering if that means that if it gets to big it will be able to suck up the earth? I really like the suspense the question give and that the article is very short and gets the point across.

The Skinless Wonder: I thought it was illegal to but I guess not in some places.

Ryley Clyde: I just want to know why Dede is half a tree otherwise it is good

I read an article called Vitamins ‘Do Not Cut Cancer Risk’ I found it on BBC News and the author is not stated. The article was about how there was a study to prove that vitamins could not lower the risk of cancer. The article explained that they had two trials, one on men and one on women. I found the article well written and kind of interesting. It wasn’t exactly what I’d prefer to read, but it was still interesting enough. It surprised me that Vitamin C could reduce the benefits of anti-cancer drugs. One question I have is; is there a way to reduce the risk of cancer? Another question I have is; are scientists researching ways to lower the risk of cancer?

Weekly Article Report

Title: Speedy Stars
Author: Stephen Ornes
I liked this article because it was very interesting. My favorite part was when it said that it was not only going faster than the rest of the stars but it was going the wrong direction. This article was about how 16 stars that was going in the wrong direction. There was one star that was going out instead of around. One of the stars was going a lot faster than the other stars. A scientist was looking up at the stars one night and he noticed the one star and thought that he was on to something. Something I would like to know is how the one star was going so fast and how it broke away from the other stars.

World’s Coral Reefs Are Vanishing, Report Says
Matthew Knight
CNN.com

I read an article about how coral reefs are disappearing. It stated that almost one-fifth of the reefs have disappeared.

I didn’t really like the article that I read. I didn’t like some of the big words they used or the format it was written in. It was in small print and there were articles giving information. At the end, there were just small paragraphs with quotes form people. I know that it was on CNN which is for grown-ups, but I thought that it could have been a little bit more user friendly.

I was surprised that they think that by 2050 all of the coral reefs will be gone. I really didn’t know that coral reefs were dying so rapidly, in fact I didn’t really know that they were dying as much as they are. I have heard about it a couple of times, but I never really put much thought into it.

I am a little bit confused about why it is happening. It clearly states one reason but I wonder if there are anymore. I would also like to know if they coral reefs can feel what is happening because they are living things.

The skinless wonder- You did a really good job explaining your reaction. You could work a little bit more on your opinion because it was half and half.

Bandcamp- You did a good job doing your reflection. Work on talking a little bit less about what the article is about though.

Pretty pink prince- I like your information but you need to work on answering all of the questions in your reflection.

Supatra ‘Nat’ Sasuphan is like any other little girl; she enjoys doing what little girls do but in other ways she is a one in a billion girl, being one of only about 50 people to ever have this syndrome since 1638, born with thick 5cm long animal fur covering her head. Nat was born with congenital hypertrichosis, known as ‘werewolf syndrome’.

Nat just tries to live a normal 11 year old girls life. Nat is always accompanied by cruel name calling. As Nat heads towards puberty, her family are growing increasingly desperate for a treatment to control the hair growth and to give their daughter a normal life.

Critical report on zoo elephants is debated

I found this article in New York Times.com. This article discussed how recent research states that elephants kept in zoos catch disease easier and have a shorter life of about 18.9 years. I enjoyed this article. I am interested and enjoy animals so this article caught my eye. I liked how the report gave you numbers and details on what happens to elephants kept in captivity appose to animals left in the wild. One thing that I did not like about this article was how confusing it was and the difficult language that was used. Overall I did like this article and found it interesting. One thing that really surprised me was that elephants in captivity only live to an average of 18.9 years old but kept in the wild there life span is Greatly increased to 47.7 years old. For such a big animal it has a very short life span when held in captivity. I would like to find out more on how elephants have such a shorter life span in captivity.

The name of this article is called Black Hole Confirmed in Milky Way. This article was by Pallab Ghosh. I found this article on BBC news.

This article was about how after a 16 year study, German astronomers have confirmed that there is a black hole is in the Milky Way about 27,000 light years, or 158 thousand, million, million miles from the Earth.

I liked this article because it was very interesting and made you think about our galaxy and what lies in its depths. It surprised me that our galaxy was so huge. I always knew it was big but I didn’t think it was so huge. I wonder if there are more black holes in our galaxy. I bet there are but it’s just something to think about.

TITLE: A CLEAN GETAWAY
AUTHOR: DIANA FINE MARON
SOURCE: sciencenewsforkids.com

SUMMARY: This article is about how police investigators are having trouble at crime scenes finding blood. The reason for this is because the criminals at the crime scene can use household cleaning products to wash away blood. "Oxy" claims it can remove stains from up to 101 surfaces. These days investigators are having a lot more trouble because criminals are very smart, but this does not require much brain power at all.

REFLECTION: I thought this article was very cool and intriguing. I thought it was interesting how something as simple as "Oxy" could wash away blood stains. It is confusing to me why criminals haven't thought of this idea before.

QUESTIONS: One question I had was "do all cleaning products work for washing away blood stains?" Another question I had was "what chemicals are in the cleaning products that can wash away blood?"

Elephants ‘die earlier in zoos’
By: Not stated
BBC NEWS

This article was about how researchers found out that elephants that live in zoo’s have a shorter life span due to obesity and stress from moving from zoo to zoo.
This article really made me think about how the elephants feel. Yes, they are fun to look at in the zoo but how do you think they really feel? I bet that they don’t want to be in the zoo because its boring maybe not for you but for them it is. All they can do is eat, drink and watch people stare at them all day.
What surprised me was that normally elephants live for 40 years but in zoos they only really live for 19 years.
My question is that if the zoos started feeding the elephants a little less would they live longer? And my other question is Why do elephants need to be moved from zoo to zoo to zoo?

Anonymous said...

On December 31 the day will be a second longer. This second that is added every four years. This second it is called a leap second. This second is added on clocks so they are always correct. Earth's orbit around the sun is about 365.2422 days long. We round it to 365 to keep it simpler. A leap second is added on to clocks to keep them in synch with unpredictable nature of our planet's rotation.

I thought this article was amazing. This article interested me because I never heard about the leap second. One of the kids at my old school was born on the leap day. I was surprised about the fact there was a leap second and no one even talked about it. My sister who knows about weird science stuff was surprised to hear about the leap second.

To Magentarocks

Your summary was very descriptive. Your reflection like your summary was descriptive to say how you felt about the article. I liked how you said the writers gathered a lot of information. I would like to know if they could make a vaccine for dogs because I live near woods and my dog gets so many ticks it takes 5 minutes just to pull them all off of her.

To The Skinless Wonder

Your reflection was descriptive to say how you felt about the article. Your summary was very descriptive. If you like this article enough there is a show on Discovery Channel called Whale Wars. It is about people busting people in Japan for illegal whaling.

World's corals reefs are vanishing, report says
By, Matthew Knight
CNN News
This article states that the world has lost more than one- fifth of its coral reefs. The Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network brought back work of researchers from 15 different countries, with data from 20 years ago. Scientists are warning that any reef destruction could have a huge consequence to over 500 million people who depend on the reef for livelihood. A reporter states that the reefs will be completely wiped out by 2050. According to a new report the Coral reefs will be wiped out in 30-40 years.
What I liked about this article is that it tells how we are effecting the environment. It tells us the consequences of our actions. Its like a big warning to us, they are saying that we still have time to fix this problem. If we put forth an effort to save the enviroment, we could also be saving lives.
What surprised me about this article, is that because of the harm to the reefs 500 million peoples livelihood could be at stake.
What I would like to know more about is how we can try to help, to prevent this problem from happening.
