Weekly Science Article Report - Reproduction - Period 1

Here is the place to post your Weekly Science Article Report for this week.
Remember that for this one, you will be finding an article that relates in some way to reproduction.
Possible topics include:
  • Stem Cells
  • Cloning
  • Regeneration
  • Grafting
Or find something that you really are interested in.

For a reminder, here's what to do for this assignment:
1) Citation: Here you will put the name of the article, the author, and where you found it (for example, the New York Times or Science News for Kids).
2) A brief summary: Here you will summarize the article in one or two sentences. This is to give your readers (including me) a sense of what you have read.
3) Reflection: This is the biggest part of your report. I am interested in your response to the article. Please address the following questions in your reflection:
a) What did you think about the article? Did you like it or not? Why?
b) What interested you or surprised you about the article?
c) What questions do you have about what you read? What would you like to know more about what you’ve read?

Your report is due Friday here on the blog.

By Monday, you will post comments on the work of three other students. Your comments should include:
1) One thing you appreciated/liked about their report - something you think they did well.
2) One suggestion you have for how they might improve their work in the future.
As always, I look forward to reading your work.

Your report is due by Friday, January 9. Your comments on the work of 3 other students is due by Monday, January 12.

The article that I found was Stem cells: FAQs at http: //www .cbc.ca /health/st ory/2009/0 1/07/f-stemcells.html.
The article was talking about how the study of stem cells has become popular over the last ten years. It also talked about In May 2007, Ontario and California announced a $30-million stem cell research deal aimed at finding new therapies for diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and cancer.
I thought this article was really interesting because we might finally find a cure for cancer. My question is when will finding a cure seem possible?

1)Review Article Wound repair and regeneration
By: Geoffrey C. Gurtner, Sabine Werner, Yann Barrandon,& Michael T. Longaker
Found:http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v453/n7193/full/nature07039.html

2) It was mainly about how the human body has its ways of regeneration. Such as healing cuts burns etc. It also teaches you about how we make a reconnective tissue to heal our wounds making a non-functioning mass of fibrotic tissue known as a scar. (Teaches you alot about it.)

3) a. I think that this article was probably the most interesting article about the human bodies regeneration system. It was awesome, becuase i learned new things and it was cool in general.
B. The way we recreate our skin when we get a cut, burn etc.
C. No questions about what I've read. I would like to know when will we actually be able to regrow limbs and what might make us be able to do that.

The article that i found is called Animal Cloning and the website is www.buzzle.com/articles/animal-cloning.com
The article is about how scientists these days can try to figure out to do many things that you couldnt back then. It also talks about how the chance of a correct fusion is literally a ratio of 1:300. Most of the clonings that they have done previously has not come out perfect.
i liked the article because i thought it was interesting to read about.
Something that interested me was that it said that Dolly was the first mammal ever to be cloned from an adult cell.
If they ever find out how to clone a human, i would like to know more about that.

Animal Clones: Double Trouble?
Emily Sohn
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20040128/Feature1.asp

This article on animal cloning discusses how scientists have discovered a way to clone 11 kinds of animals, including sheep, cows, pigs, mice, and horses. It also describes how cloning experiments can go awry and the cloned animal dies young.
A) I liked this article because it is written in a way so kids can really understand cloning. It tells us that scientists are discovering great stuff today and that this is one example.
B) What interested me (and surprised) me about this article was that if cloning worked the way it was supposed to, it would be a huge advantage to have use on the farm, or to make it possible to replace a household pet that you loved a lot. I also came to realize is that cloning is possible most of the time, if you keep trying until it is successful.
C) One question I do have regarding this article is whether scientists have ever come close to finding a clone for a human and if they did, what would be the worst possible scenario if it went awry? Other then that the article supplied a lot of detail and was a good read.

The article that I read was How Cloning Works
by Craig Freudenrich, Ph.D.

This article was about how cloning is done and the first clone ever. The first clone ever was Dolly (a sheep) . Dolly was cloned in 1997, and since then many other animals have been cloned

• They made it really easy to understand how they clone animals

• I also like how theyhad a video link in the article it made it easier to understand the concept

A few questions that I had were…

• Is the personality of the animal cloned as well?
• Are there any laws restricting further research of cloning?
• Can you clone an amiba?

1) Citation:
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cancer/MM00638
2) A brief summary:
how cancer multiplies in the body. Also how the cancer cells spread.

3) Reflection: cancer cells reproduce like cells usually do in mitosis. The cell take over the body, it starts with a tumor and spreads through your body with sometimes you not even knowing. Certain types of cancer like Melanoma start as a mole and take over by spreading from one part to another. Some cancers can not be treated but Melanoma can, if you catch it before it spreads.
I thought this article was very interesting because I didn’t know that cancer could be treated I only thought that they (scientist) were finding a way of treating it.
Did they find any other treatments for cancer?

Citation: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/animal-cloning/

Many people have pets and they don’t like to here the truth that their pets will need to die someday. Now they don’t need to worry about that anymore because scientists have figured out a way to clone animals. Now animal cloning can be done both by reproduction and non-reproduction.
Me being a cat and dog owner I don’t like to here the truth sometimes either but know there isn’t much need to be depressed as before because of animal cloning!

Britain's First Breast Cancer Gene-Free Designer Baby Born
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,478406,00.html

2) A woman had breast cancer, and her baby was born without it. It was unusual because there is a 80% chance of the baby developing the breast cancer. The mom carrying gene dooes not make it unavoidable.

3) a) I think this article demonstrates the huge possibility of acquiring cancer, while the parent has it. I didn't really understand why it was such a big deal, but i know it was important.
b) What surprised me was how there was an 80% chance of the baby getting cancer, and it didn't happen, which was a miracle.
c) I would want to k now if this has ever happened before, and if so, if the baby ended up living or getting it later in life (60% chance).

saints of los angeles,

What I liked the most about your article was the question you asked. The question is a real thinker for people.
What I thought you could change about your article is that you forgot to do a reflection.

Garfield,

The topic of your article was a really good topic to write about, so thumbs up for that.
What I thought you could maybe change about it is that maybe brainstorm up of a clearer question.

Lizzy,

The thing that interested me most about your article was that you listed an example of a real live animal that was cloned and also happened to be the first one.
The thing you could probably change about your article is that you could give more description about why you liked it (or thought it was interesting.)

Animal Clones: Double Trouble?
Emily Sohn
sciencenewsforkids.org

This article is about how cloning works and how animals that are cloned if they survive they die young.

I thought this article was very interesting. I like this article a lot. One part i thought was interesting is how animals that are cloned live a shorter amount of time then animals that arent cloned. Scientists have cloned 11 animals so far.

Dear garfeild,
I think that your eflection is good. I liked your reflection. You explained what you like very well. One thing that I would try to change would be to say two question you had instead of one.

Dear lizzy,
I think that your reflection was good. One thing i would do is to say the author of the article you read.

Dear bookworm695,
I think that your reflection was good. One thing I would do is to summarize your article with a little more detail.

garfield:
1) I liked the article you chose.
2) I don't think this needs to be improved.

hatenongorse:
1) You added a lot of detail on how the cancer cells reproduce.
2) Not much improvement needed, I just think it would be easier to read if you separated everything you wrote by the questions that were asked, instead of just leaving it in one big paragraph.

theone666:
1) For cloning your pet, is it an easy process to do it, or does it take a while, and an expensive thing to do?
2) I think you could add a question about the article.

1)dear saints of los angeles your artical was good but you never included what stem cells actualy are. I like how you included some dedises ?conditions caused by stem cells.

2)theone666 your artical was good but yo never asked any questions.

BACKWARDS SDRAWKCAB

I thought that you could’ve wrote a better summary and also for future advice try not to use bullets in the blog because it like makes all the information you got looks like very little information.
