Links to Something Cool - Period 4

You job this week is to comb the internet for incredibly cool, and incredibly true science stuff.

You will then post a link (or links) to the incredibly cool thing, and then write a little bit about what makes it cool in your opinion.

I want no repeats, so be careful to read what others have posted before you. We want to end up with a class worth of cool science things.

http://www.coolsciencefacts.com/2007/space_shuttle.html

Reflection: This article is about how space shuttle doses not have room for the gas on the inside so they store it on the outside. They store it in a big brown cylinder on the outside of the shuttle. What surprised me was that the container weighs seven times the shuttle itself.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/1569156/Tree-man-'who-grew-roots'-may-be-cured.html

This article is about a guy who has a disease that turned his hands into tree roots. It talks about his hardships and what he has had to overcome.

I think that this article is cool because I never knew that there was a disease that could make you grow roots, and it is amazing to think that there is a disease that can turn parts of your body into tree parts. I thought this was cool because in the article it says that he might be cured. The fact that I didn’t even know that this kind of illness existed; the fact that there might be a cure amazes me even more.

What’s Happening: A Planet with a planet? Spitzer finds cosmic oddball.

It’s talking about how they are finding brown dwarfs are starting to develop there own solar systems. Normally they only just float in outer space not being big enough for pulling in other material. The weird part is that it is one of the smaller brown dwarfs known to man.

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/lifestyle/2007-09/10/content_6094008.htm

What I found really interesting bout this article is that they can actually cure nail biting. I used to be a nail biter myself but I decided to quit and it was really hard. If I had had this little device when I stopped, it would have been SO much easier. The only thing that surprised me a LOT about this article was the price of the treatment. Anyhow, enjoy the article.

Anger is good for you.

http://www.livescience.com/health/051103_anger.html

Summary: This article is about how people respond to anger, fear and disgust.People who (in stressful situations) react with short-term anger have a sense of control and optimism that isn't there if you respond with fear. Meaning that if you become angry and frustrated, that is completely normal.

Something that surprised me was that people who respond with fear get a higher blood pressure than people who respond with anger!

Honeybees do the wave

This article is about how honeybees do the “wave.” The honeybees create a ripple effect. To make this ripple effect they all flip their abdomens upward to scare predators away. When I saw this article it reminded me of the wave that people do in stadiums.

Roller Coaster Physics
http://www.learner.org/interactives/parkphysics/

This article was about how roller coasters are made with a certain physics that make it feel dangerous when you’re on them even though they’re very safe. It also talked about how roller coasters work, and the difference between wooden and steel roller coasters. Even though I only kind of like roller coasters, I thought it was cool how roller coasters don’t have engines.

Jellyfish Lures Dinner with Flashing Red Lights

http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/science/07/07/redlightlure/index.html

This article is about this jellyfish that tentacles have lights that flash red. "You actually got adrenalin going. You wouldn't think [a jellyfish] would get your heart rate up, but it was pretty exciting. It's one of the most tangible benefits of being a scientist," said Haddock. I could just imagine swimming in the ocean when you see something red blinking. Then you get closer and closer then you get zapped.

This article is about pain expectations. Scientists are saying that because of the way your brain works, how painful you expect an injury to be can affect how you feel when you're actually hurt.

I thought this article was very surprising because it says that can use your mind to control pain. This article reminds me of the saying “Mind over Matter,” which means you can use your mind to limit how much pain you feel. You can almost choose if you want more pain or less. Whenever I know I am going to have to face pain, I always try to think that it won’t hurt.

http://science.howstuffworks.com/e-bomb.htm

You have all heard of nuclear weapons and machine guns but the e-bomb presents a whole new idea for mass destruction. E-bombs are bombs that would destroy every piece of electrical equipment in a large city. I am not a big fan of this weapon because if our enemies got this weapon we would lose all of our military documents, leaving us defenseless. It would also take down all of our educational documents and political documents leaving us knowledge less. Go to the site to get cool pictures and videos of the e-bomb.

http://www.figure8films.tv/shows/conh.htm

SUMMARY : I searched “Siamese twins” and found an interesting article where two girls named Lori and Dori were conjoined by the head looking opposite directions. I found this article extremely interesting because they have lived their whole life like that for 43 years! These two women are known to be the oldest living female conjoined twins in the world. Lori and Dori don’t have the option to get surgery because they both share blood circulation and brain tissue. I don’t know if I could live my whole life with someone attached to my head. These two women have to get along really well to spend their whole life conjoined by the head. Surprisingly they have pursued jobs. Dori is a country singer and even though Lori is physically attached she takes no part of Dori’s career. The two ladies both believe that god intended for them to be this way.

I read an article about the tiniest snake known to earth that was discovered in Barbados. The snake is called Leptotyphlops carlae. It is part of the “threadsnake” group. I found the article interesting because it is not something that you would see everyday in a newspaper or online. The snake is only about 100 millimeters long (a little under 4 inches or about the length of a computer mouse). The snake is so small that it looks like a worm, maybe even smaller. The color of the snake is also the same as a worm. The only difference that I saw was that the snake is scaly and you could tell where the head is. I also thought that the fact that the snake only carries one egg in her body was very interesting. The things that most caught my interest were the pictures. There was a picture of the snake and at the end of the article there was a picture of a tiny lizard and a list of other creatures in extreme size that have

REFLECTION- This article is about a Hindu toddler who was born with 8 limbs. It talks about how she was born with a 'parasitic twin' who did not survive birth.
I found this article very interesting because it talks about how the bones had formed on her body, and what surgeons are going to do when they operate on her removing the unnecessary limbs.

http://www.neatorama.com/2007/03/26/10-strange-facts-about-einstein/

I read an article about how Albert Einstein’s brain was put in a jar for 43 years. It surprised me that a brain can last that long. After his death in 1955, his was removed from his head. The doctors never got permission from Einstein’s family. It was removed by Thomas Stoltz Harvey. He was a pathologist who preformed the autopsy. He took the brain home with him and kept it in a jar in the trunk of his car. He was fired for not getting rid of the brain.

http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20080917/Note1.asp

This article was mostly about how kids who get frequent ear infections (bad enough to require meds), are twice as likely to be obese later in life.
Why? It doesn't really explain. All it says it that, "Frequent ear infections seem to make kids develop a strong preference for fatty foods."

Overall the article was okay. It taught me something interesting i didn't know, so it was pretty cool.

This article was about how some scientists have sent digital messages into space with information about earth. They are hoping that the message will reach its target; the planet Gliese 581C, by 2029. I really liked this article because I am interested in learning about space and life on other planets. I hope you like this article too and take the same interest.

Here is the site: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7660449.stm

Also, check out the video it’s pretty cool.

http://www.livescience.com/animals/081016-dinosaur-crests.html

Reflection:The headgear worn by duck-billed dinosaurs millions of years ago was used to make eerie, weird calls. The study also showed that as the dinosaurs matured into adults, their voices probably changed from high-pitched to deep. The head crest enclosed nose passages that looped through the head crest to form large air chambers before passing into the airway throat. At first they thought it was for sense of smell and temperature. The scientists now think it was for vocal communication not giant sniffers.

Scientist have harnessed the compound that is 10 times stronger than a gecko's

Scientists have been able to successfully replicate and strengthen the glue-like compound that are secreted from a gecko's feet (which allows it to climb vertical surfaces). This sticky substance is 10 times stronger than the substance the gecko creates in nature, and a square inch of this matter will be able to suspend a real life Spiderman. The way the glue works is that it uses carbon nano-tubes to replicate the tiny hairs found in the glue used to stick to surfaces.

It is an article about that geckos do not use suction cups but a glue like paste on their feet. Scientist can remake it 10times stronger

Hobbes-
I like your article because I didn't think that there was a cure for a habit.

Curlylocks-
I thought your article was really cool because I didn't know that there were people with 8 limbs.
