Weekly Science Article Report # 3 - Period 6

This week you have your 3rd weekly science article report to do.

For this one, I want you to focus on science articles that relate in some way to the human body and how it works.

For a reminder, here's what to do for this assignment:
1) Citation: Here you will put the name of the article, the author, and where you found it (for example, the New York Times or Science News for Kids).
2) A brief summary: Here you will summarize the article in one or two sentences. This is to give your readers (including me) a sense of what you have read.
3) Reflection: This is the biggest part of your report. I am interested in your response to the article. Please address the following questions in your reflection:
a) What did you think about the article? Did you like it or not? Why?
b) What interested you or surprised you about the article?
c) What questions do you have about what you read? What would you like to know more about what you’ve read?

Your report is due Friday here on the blog.

By Monday, you will post comments on the work of three other students. Your comments should include:
1) One thing you appreciated/liked about their report - something you think they did well.
2) One suggestion you have for how they might improve their work in the future.

Article Title- Heavy Sleep
Author- Janet Raloff
Science News

This article is about how not sleeping enough can result in being overweight. The study shows that for every hour you sleep, there is a 40% less chance that you will be overweight by 6th grade, the study also shows that sleeping is one of the largest factors (besides overeating and under excersising) in being over weight.

(Maybe school should start later and end earlier so we can get more sleep! Just kidding, I LOVE SCHOOL!)

Article title: Ear Pain, Weight Gain
Author: its doesn't say.
Science News for kids

This article is about when children are young, and get a lot of ear infections(bad enought they need medication), they are more likely to be obese later in life other than children with healthy ears. In the article it says the reason of becoming obese is the pain makes kids develope a strong preference for fatty foods. I thought this article was very interesting. I would have never thought unhealthy ears would make you become obese later in life. I thought it was interesting on how the pain makes you want fatty foods. My question is; How does the pain in your ear make you want fatty foods?

Dear ps3fanboy,
I liked your article because it was very similar to mine, and how you used precentages and numbers to back-up your facts. All-in-all I thought your article was good, and I agree that children our age need more sleep!

Name of article: Hey batter wake up
Author: It doesn’t say
Were I found it: Science News for kids

Studies say that baseball teams that travel a lot are more likely to lose. This is because baseball teams that travel from different time zones effects the time there body is used to slowing down and getting ready for bed or to go to sleep. This is because your body needs a full day of rest to be at top condition for the day. When people cross different time zones and it changes times this is called jet lag. So next time you see your great fellow team the Yankees and they lose an away game it’s definitely because of jet lag! I liked this article a lot because it informed me and told me that the Yankees don’t lose because they are just stinking this year but because its jet lag.

The Chemistry of Sleeplessness
www.sciencenewsforkids.com

This article is about how you can stay awake when your body is tired. I like this article because I learned a lot from it. This was a very interesting article. Something that I thought was interesting was that there is a chemical in your brain called dopamine, which helps you stay alert when you feel tired. One question that I have is if there is any more chemicals involved that help you stay awake when your body is tired?

Dear ps3fanboy,
I think that you did well with your article. I never knew that by not getting enough sleep can result in being overweight. You did really well but I think you should improve on following all of the criteria. But good job (:

Article-The chemistry of sleeplessness
Author- Did not say =[
Website-http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/

This article is about how your body is when you don't get sleep. Theirs a chemical in your brain called dopamine, which is what keeps people who don't get enough sleep to stay awake.
I think that this article was very interesting. I learned about the human body; in this case how dopamine keeps you awake.
The only question I have is, how do the chemicals in your brain keep you awake?

Dear megatron410k,
I liked your response to the article because you put a lot into it. I would have never known that baseball teams loose because of jet lag. The only suggestion I have is next time you may want to put in your questions, but other then that I thought you did a really good job.

Dear lovepinkx3,
I thought you did a really good job on your response to the article. I never knew there were chemicals in your brain. I thought your question was very good too.
good job!

The name of the article is “How Tuberculosis Bacteria Hide and Multiply in the Human Body”. The article is by University of British Colombia( 2008 May 15). The link for this article is http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/05/080514134645.htm. This article is about how a white blood cell uses enzymes and breaks apart the TB and there is no disease. But then TB becomes strong and blocks this process allowing the TB to hide in the white blood cell. I really liked this article because it helped me understand a little more about what white blood cells do and do to help us. We wouldn’t be here without them. White blood cells are a main part of surviving and living healthy. Something that interested me and also surprised me about this article is that white blood cells are supposed to fight the bad germs then kill them but the white blood cell can be taken over if the bacteria are strong enough. Some questions that I have about this article are, other than TB, are there any other bacteria strong enough to take over a white blood cell? Or does it just depend on how strong some certain bacteria are?

Dear volleyball24,
I never knew that young children got so many infections. I just thought they got infection during winter. I really liked the fact that you wrote about something that most of us knew but didn't know. Something you should really work on is making your article much longer and more elaborate.

Yours truly, volleyballxshortyy.

Dear lovepinkx3,
I didn't actually know what chemical kept you awake when you were tired. I liked that I learned something from you. Something you can work on is makin the article or report MUCH more longer and elaborate.

I read this article called Homework Blues. I thought it wa very interesting and sort of odd to hear about. I found this article at sciencenewsforkids.com.

This article is about how kids that are usually in a sad mood do better on problems in school and tests. Sad kids tend to do better then other kids that are not sad. Scientists did experiments to show this and the sad kids came up with answers faster then the happy kids. The scienctists did this test on six and seven year olds.

I thought this article wa pretty surprising. I thought that happy kids would do better in school then neutral/sad kids. I liked this article becaue it was facts that I never heard about and it was an eye opener. I have some questions. One question is does this work on adults too?

I liked what you wrote. I thought that you really told the basic facts and It interested me. One suggestion though is you could of made it a tiny bit longer.

the article i read was called the chemistry of sleepyness. this article is about how hard it is to saty awake during class. When the school year starts, it can be tough to switch from lazy summer mornings to the blaring buzz of an alarm clock. After a few early mornings, extreme fatigue might make you feel like you’re going to fall over, acording to the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y.

Study Links Age of Blood in Transfusions to Infections
By REUTERS
The New York Times

Patients, who received blood transfusions stored 29 days or longer, are likely to receive infection compared to patients who received newer blood.

I think the article was very important, especially to people receiving or that have received blood transfusions. I liked it because it gave a lot of information on the important subject. I think it id important for people to know about the subject that was in this article. It surprised me that the infections people were getting from the blood stored 29 days or longer weren’t H.I.V. or hepatitis, but an increased condition to infection as a result of the transfusions.

My question is how can you tell the blood won't have these infections the next time someone gets a transfusion of blood?

Title: Less sleep = fatter
Author:Stefan Anitei

This article is about kids who wake up early get fatter. It shows that kids who get less sleep impedes the body synthesizing some amounts of hormone that raises the appetite. The study said that 23% of kids who get less sleep become obese.

I read about a computer generated rat that duplicates the functions of a real human. it is supposedly the next lab rat for the future. the rat is called HUMTRN. It lets the scientist see 10 thousand pieces of information about what happened to it during the test. I thought that this should have made the front page. if you really think about that, there wont be so much fuss about animal testing and all of that. because of this, we can test so many more medicines on this. if anybody wants to check this out, here is the link:

Dear summerloverxx3,
I thought that the topic you chose was really interesting. I think you did really good on the format of what you wrote. One thing you should work on just slightly is putting more of what you think of the article in the opinion part of the report.

Yours truly,

Dear ps3fanboy,
I liked your article because I never knew that not getting enough sleep can lead to obesity and getting over weight. The thing I would say to improve on would be to include the last part which is to say how you liked this article.

Dear job. volleyball24,
I liked your because I never knew that little babies with ear infections could lead to obesity. I thing you could improve on was show how you think of the article more but good

Article title: The Chemistry Of Sleeplessness
Author: It doesn't say
Science News for Kids, September 17, 2008

This article is about the release of dopamine which is a brain chemicle that can help you stay up and pay attention even when you are tired. A study was done of 2 groups, one group who had a good night sleep, and the other group who stayed up all night. The results showed that in the group who stayed up all night the dopamine increased in 2 parts of the brain and they could still function without sleep.

I found this article very interesting and it made sense to me. I liked reading it, because I could relate to the article since I am sleep deprived too.

I am surprised there is such a thing as dopamine, and I wonder how scientists can up with the name dopamine. I would like to know more about how long a person can function and pay attention without enough sleep and if there are any long term negative damage to the brain and body.

I read an article called The chemisrty of sleeplessness by many scientists( their names where not there) it was about kids who dont get enough sleep to go to schoolnd they were doing results of what happens when we dont get enough sleep. I found this article by going on www.scienceforkids.com and clicking Human Body and there was a list of all different topics. It was intersting seeing what scientists are saying about sleep. What supprised me that there's a brain chemical called dopamine can help you stay awake when you feel tired.

Dear LovePinkx3,
I read the same article as you. I though it was very interesting. I didn’t know about dopamine before I read the article. You did a good job on your article.

Dear Thinkpink21,
Wow. That was a good topic to choose. Sad kids do better on tests then happy kids. I never would have guessed that. Great job on your article.

Dear summerloverxx3,
Your article was very interesting. People could get infections from older blood then newer when you get blood transfusions. Anyways good job.

Dear volleyball24,

Hopefully I don't get an ear infection... Anyways, very good comment, never would have thought that getting an ear infection would make people have a strong "preference" for junk foods.

Good Job!!!

Dear magatron401k,

That actualy makes sense... I don't know why I didn't think of that and then publish it and make a ton of money... Anyways, great job, I guess this applys to all sports not just baseball.

Dear thinkpink41,

Wow, never would have known that unhappy kids would do better in school than happy kids. Not too much to improve on. GREAT JOB!!
