Weekly Science Article Report #2 - Period 6

The purpose of this assignment is to develop your ability to read and write about science.
The assignment:
Each week you will find an science related article that is interesting to you. It can be about any topic, not just whatever we are studying in class. Then you will write a report which has these three parts:
1) Citation: Here you will put the name of the article, the author, and where you found it (for example, the New York Times or Science News for Kids).
2) A brief summary: Here you will summarize the article in one or two sentences. This is to give your readers (including me) a sense of what you have read.
3) Reflection: This is the biggest part of your report. I am interested in your response to the article. Please address the following questions in your reflection:
a) What did you think about the article? Did you like it or not? Why?
b) What interested you or surprised you about the article?
c) What questions do you have about what you read? What would you like to know more about what you’ve read?

Click here to find tons of science articles.

Your report is due Friday here on the blog.

By Monday, you will post comments on the work of three other students. Your comments should include:
1) One thing you appreciated/liked about their report - something you think they did well.
2) One suggestion you have for how they might improve their work in the future.

Greens Welcome New Climate Dept
By Mark Kinver

This article is about the UK changing the energy sources in the UK. The UK wants to have Clean and efficent energy source, such as Solar or wind, but these take up alot of space.

I think the article was a good one because it had both sides of the argument, how clean energy like sloar and wind is good, and how it is bad. I think that I don't need to know more about the article because I have backround knowledge on the subject.

Dear ps3fanboy,
I thought that you'rea article was interesting expesicllay because I'm really interested in the whol global warming thing going on, recycling, and how to conserve energy and reduce waste. One thing that I thought you should have done more is, you should have made your report a whole lot longer. Not like 3 pages long but a reasonable amount of work.

Our Plastic World
by Emily Sohn
www.sciencenewsforkids.org.

This article is about how plastic is all around our world and can be
very dangerous. This article is very and interesting and I liked it because it made me aware of how dangerous plastic really is. What was interesting about this article was that plastic can cause cancer, birth defects, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD). A question that I have about this article is are people going to actually stop using plastic or just ignore it?

Anonymous said...

Dear lovepinkxx3,
I was also very interested about the article that you posted. Most of the plastic we use, we recycle. So this just changed my point of view of recycling plastic. One thing you should really work on, is being more elaborate, following the guidelines Mr.Ardito gave us for the Weekly Science Article Report # 2. You should have made it much longer, more elaborate and the guidelines should have been followed.

Dear ps3fanboy,
i think your article is interesting because i think everyone should recycle and try as hard as they can to stop global warming. I also think there should be clean energy source even though it would take up a lot of space, maybe its a good idea, if they do that maybe global warming will become less of a problem.

Anonymous said...

Dear lovepinkx3,
i thought your response was interesting because i never knew how dangerous plastic can really be. How could it really cause cancer? Is there a bad chemical in it? I also think that it would be really hard for people to stop using plastic, its all around the world, mos people would probably just ignore it.

Citation-Title: Chew For Health
Author: Emily Sohn
Found: Science News for
Kids

Summary: Chewing gum may be good for you.

Reflection: I thought this article was interesting because it stated that chewing gum may be healthy for you, and it could help you on test scores. I was surprised about this article because it said that companies might try to add vitamins, minerals, and medicines. This could help fight off headaches and everything for diseases and bad breath. My questions are is the gum still going to taste good? and Are the prices going to go p since they are adding new things to it? I would like to know more about how it helps you on tests.

Lost penguins get Brazil Air lift
By Gary Duffy From BBC NEWS

This article is about hundreds of penguins that’s have been returned to there homes in the native territory in the south Atlantic ocean by an air force plane after being found on Brazils coast. I liked this article because it was about penguins and I like penguins because they have always interested me and I always thought that they were cool. What I was surprised about was that I never knew that penguins were found on Brazil’s coast, I mean I always thought that they were found in Antarctica or some place colder than Brazil. I really thought this article was interesting because it taught me something that I never even knew. Some of the questions I would ask is were these penguins lost, have they ever had penguins on the coast of Brazil before, and what type of penguins were they and stuff like that. I would like to learn more info on this article because it really made me interested and want to learn more about this

I really liked your report because I find it interesting that gum could help you do better on test scores. I think you asked very good questions but I would of liked to have more information on what the companies are going to add to the gum.

I like how you wrote your article by saying how platic can be very dangerous and how many people wouldnt take this affect seriously. For example, they say if you stand in front of your microwave it could possibly cause cancer. I like the way you stated how you feel about how dangerous plastic is and if people will just ignore it or actually stop using it. Only suggestion would be to maybe add more detail to your explanation.

Music Downloads: Is the price right?
by Olga Kharif

This article is about a battle between the Apple Music company and the music industry. They are saying that Apple (AAPL) and other online music distributors should pay higher royalty fees to music publishers.

I think this article was good because Apple is a really big music distribution group and they make a lot of money and some of that money does belong to the music publishers. I don't think i need to know more about this story because now I know why some people say downloading and buying music from Apple is bad.

This is for hannahmontanarox.

You did a pretty good job with your report, but I don't see how the article you picked has to do with science.

Can you help me to understand your choice?

Anonymous said...

dear volleyball24,
i really liked the article you chose. i never knew that chewing gum could help you on tests. One thing you could improve on is explaining how it could help you on tests and why it is good for your health.

Anonymous said...

dear Megatron401k,
i really liked the article you chose because i also like penguins and it sounded like a very interesting article. you explained a lot about the article and it was very good. The only suggestion i would make on how to improve it is your punctuation because in your first sentence it said that's and it only needed to say that, but other than that you did vey well :)

Anonymous said...

Dear ps3fanboy,
i think that your article was pretty good. What I thought was interesting about your response was that you stated that the article had both sides of the article. You need to improve on expanding your reflection and following the directions that Mr.Ardito gave out.

Is the Sun a Perfect Sphere??

By (Gary Palmer)

Scientists using NASA’s RHESSI spacecraft has measured the roundness of the sun with unprecedented precision. They find that it is not a perfect sphere. On the sun they measure some 30,000 km across (twice as wide as Earth) and are made of seething hot magnetized plasma. Some people say its a perfect sphere but they do not have to technology to prove their hypothesis true. Unlike NASA that does have the Technology. More people Believe NASA over not very known scientist. Every time I see the sun it’s always a perfect sphere so when I saw this article I was very surprised.

I really liked your article. i think here in the us we should do that. i also agree that the UK doesnt have enough room to do that but i think here in the us we could do that here like in the desert.

one thing is that you spelt a couple words wrong otherwise it was a very interesting article. that would be really cool if gum could cure diseases. i would like it if our school would let us chew gum because maby we would do even better in school.

I really liked your article alot. It was very interesting on how plastic can be so bad for humans and animals. also when you look back in the past people have never really been "afraid" of plastic materials. now i dont think they could just take away plastic materials because that is how we make things.

i did my research on a new speeches of honeybees.
what makes these honey bees so special, is that in a use of defense, the shimmer, or as the article says, they do the wave, its pretty amazing. it says that most hornets wont leave your trail, and that bees and hornets fight a lot, so they have that as a strategy to scare them off.

Gerald Ardito said...

Your research sounds interesting. Please post the citation for the article or articles you have read.

this is for anyone who wants to check out the honey bees

Dear drummsonguitar,
I really liked your article. There's a lot of issues going on with bees and losing them, so when you said something positive about how bees are, it made me sigh a breath of relief.
One thing you should really work on is detail, you need to inckude facts and such.

title: Moon mission delayed until 2009
by: unknown
found at: http://www.cnn.com

NASA has delayed an unmanned launch to the moon, after NASA swaped with the Air Force, which will fly a prototype space drone.

I honestly didn't like the article I read. I thought that it could give more information on why the launch was delayed. I thought they could have explained things better and made the article more interesting and easier to understand.

I thought it was surprinsing that it cost the space agency up to 7 million dollars a month to delay the launch.

I would like to know more about the article I read. Just about why the launch was delayed and how much trouble they have to go through to do so, besides money wise.

The article that I picked was from http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/03/080303145228.html. The authors for this article is the Western Reserve University. This article is about how men have a really hard time giving forgiveness to someone who did them wrong than a women. Men look for vengeance while the women have empathy. The way men finally forgave was when they put themselves in the other persons shoes and put themselves in the situation that the person was in. Men would usually hold a grudge and then when they thought about if they did that then they’d forgive. Women, at a young age, would learn to have empathy or feel bad for the person. As a girl in 8th grade at the age of 13, I know for a fact that very little have that empathy. I thought that the article was really interesting because it captured my attention that men need to take their time on forgiving whereas women take their time too but they don’t take too much. It was really surprising that forgiveness came to women more than to men. I’d like to know about the age groups that they studied or what age groups that this applies to.

I read an article on jelly fish. I thought it was very interesting. I recommend this article because i really liked it. If you copy and paste this into the browser the article will come up http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20080409/Feature1.asp The title is called Blooming Jellies by Rachel Ehrenberg.

This article is about how a lot of jelly fishes are showing up in places that usually don't have a lot of jellyfishes. Jellie fishes can really itch and even get you really sick. Fishermen sometimes have to stop fishing for days because they're are somany swarms of jellyfish. The Japenese team think that giant jellyfish are born close to the coast. I really

I enjoyed reading this article. I liked it. It surprosed me how the population of jellyfishes are high now. I have a lot of questions for this article. One question is how much does an average jellyfish weigh.

By James Kanter

New York Times

Because of humans, hundreds of species could be extinct in between now and the next 50 years! One of the most endangered species is the Iberian lynx. The estimated population on earth is around 80!

Another animal becoming extinct is the fishing cat. They are right behind at #2 on the critically endangered list.

Not only mammals, but now amphibians are facing extinction. The Cuban crocodile is now on the critically endangered list. The Holdridge toad is now extinct and found only in Costa Rica.

I think this article is sad and interesting at the same time. I liked it because it was very informative and powerful. What really surprised me, was how serious a problem this really is, and that we are really why some of these animals are becoming extinct.

One thing I would like to know more about is where these animals are and why these animals are dying.

SCHOOLING FISH

schools of fish swim in unison and can easily change direction, but how is it that they do not swim into each other in the process?

fish swim in schools to protect themselves from predators like marlin and whales. Swimming in schools that are tightly packed make the small fish look bigger. Its a strategy used to try not to get eaten. Reproduction is also why some fish swim in schools, so at least some eggs are hatched. feeding is another reason why fish swim in schools, when fish senses food the rest can follow it to find the food.

My article is called 1 in 4 Mammals Faces Extinction by RANDOLPH E. SCHMID. I found this article in www.time.com. A group of teams where on a search looking indanger animals 1in 4 animals are indanger the Greater Bamboo Lemur which is found in only small areas of southeastern madagascar. They believe that only 200 of them still exist. Another animal which is indanger is the lowland gorilla which is found in africa but because of the hunting the meat and the ebola virus and other animals. I thought it was great article to learn whats going on around our world and really liked it because i love animals and to also learn about their habbits. What suprised me was that a lot of the animals i thought we had a lot of is now indangered. My question is what can we do for the madagascar animals or for some other animals farway to help them.

lovepinkx3-

I thought that your article about plastics and how dangerous they are was pretty intresting. Maybe people will stop drinking bottled water until they replace chemicals with non-harmful chemicals, and instead drink out of reusable water bottles.

I can't belive that so many species will be extinct... We humans should do something to help them. Anyways, your article looks pretty intresting, and you explained it well.

I liked your article because I never knew that honey bees communicated to each other. I also never knew that honey bees and hornets fought. I liked your article and the thing you could improve on would be to write more detail.
