Weekly Science Article Report #2 - Period 5

The purpose of this assignment is to develop your ability to read and write about science. The assignment: Each week you will find an science related article that is interesting to you. It can be about any topic, not just whatever we are studying in class. Then you will write a report which has these three parts: 1) Citation: Here you will put the name of the article, the author, and where you found it (for example, the New York Times or Science News for Kids). 2) A brief summary: Here you will summarize the article in one or two sentences. This is to give your readers (including me) a sense of what you have read. 3) Reflection: This is the biggest part of your report. I am interested in your response to the article. Please address the following questions in your reflection: a) What did you think about the article? Did you like it or not? Why? b) What interested you or surprised you about the article? c) What questions do you have about what you read? What would you like to know more about what you’ve read? Click here to find tons of science articles. Your report is due Friday here on the blog.
By Monday, you will post comments on the work of three other students. Your comments should include:
1) One thing you appreciated/liked about their report - something you think they did well.
2) One suggestion you have for how they might improve their work in the future.

Science News for Kids:
Stronger Strong Storms
By Emily Sohn
Web edition: Friday, September 26th, 2008

Review by Milky Milk

This article was about how scientists think global warming is the cause of hurricanes & other tropical storms becoming stronger every year.

I liked the way the article is elaborate. It had so much information and so much detail about how they think global warming is the cause of storms getting stronger. I find this sort of interesting because of the cause & effect of how humans are ruining the earth and how this is affecting our atmosphere. Because our earth is getting warmer, the water temperature is getting warmer. Hurricanes get their force when cold & warm air clash. A lot more “clashing” is going on & the damage on towns & cities are horrible.

I wonder why people aren’t stopping this? Why aren’t they being responsible & thinking about the world’s future? Are they thinking that we can just move to the moon when things get really bad? I want to know how we can stop polluting the earth so much and find a resolution to this problem.

Weird, New Ant
Unknown Author
Science News for Kids

This article is about a new ant species. I thought this article was interesting.
This article interested me because it is about a discovery, about something brand new. This article surprised me too because I thought that we discovered all of the new species, I didn’t think there were any more! I liked this article because it is about something new, something fresh, something that we didn’t know anything about. I have a few questions that I hope will be answered soon. Did ants really first evolve from underground? Is this really the oldest ant living today? Or are there any other ants that are older?

When Trees Grew in Antarctica
By Sid Perkins
Sciencenews.org

Antarctica is to cold to support vegetation now but scientists’ believe that from 400 billion years ago to 34 billion years ago Antarctica thrived with vegetation. Trees in Antarctica didn’t grow like other trees they had rings that were much different than today’s trees and different wood than today’s trees.

I liked this article because it I think it’s cool that there once was thriving vegetation in a place that now is home to only a few animals who have adapted to the freezing temperatures.

As for questions I have about the article, will the trees ever come back? And if so When?

I saw an article called honey bees do the wave by Gerald Castberger. Science News for Kids was the article that honey bees do the wave from. giant honey bee hives are very thin which makes it easier for there natural predator to break through the have and have dinner but the giant honeybees go outside and wave there abdomen at them the closer the wasps come the faster they spin. I thought it was sort of funny that the bees protected themselves by spining in front of the hive cant the wasps just sting the be while there spining and make a shiscobob. I liked it because they talked about animals and I like animals.

Games with a Purpose
Written by: Emily Sohn
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20070221/Feature1.asp

The article was about a person, named: Luis von Ahn and how she made a fun computer game that helps your computer learn new things that they were before unable to learn. Also the article tells how the game is played.

I thought that the article was very well written and that it gave you all the information you needed to know about the game. It told you that instead of giving bugs to your computer it gave your computer helpful information, that the can use to identify more things. I liked the article a lot because I never thought that there was a game that helped your computer, and now I know that I can do something to help my computer. I was surprised that it was possible to make a game that helps your computer. The question I have is: how can you make a game that helps your computer when everybody doesn't have the same type of computer? I would like to learn more on how they actually did make the game.

For "milky milk":

I really liked how you made it feel like I was reading the actual article. I also think you sounded like you understood the article very well. I think you can improve by explaining a little more on how this whole thing happens.

For "idk345":

I really liked how you made us aware that there was a new ant species living. I think you could have made the article better by telling us more about the article because I felt that you didn't tell us enough about the article, so I was a little lost.

For "larularu 1(7)2":

I liked how you explained what the article was about. I think you can improve by rereading your work before you publish it because in the begining some of the scentence, were very confusing.

Iphone Haters
By Brian Braiker
Newsweek.com

Last year Apple’s iphone marketed as a multimedia player with phone and internet access all in one machine. It was one of the most successful products of all time. Six million people have bought it so far making it one of the most popular smart phones models ever. Although not everyone loves it, there are haters. It is said that a lot of the technology that is in this phone already existed in many other phones. Some people dislike Apple so much that there is a, I hate Apple group on facebook.
I thought that this article was a little weird because I never thought that people would have such a strong opinion about something like that. Couldn’t people just not buy the iphone if they didn’t like it, or if they already bought it and didn’t like they could try to return it or bring it to the Apple store if it’s broken. Something that surprised me, was how many people in the world bought that phone because there are, many other phones that could probably do similar things and the iphone probably costs a lot of money.
I would like to know more about, why people are aloud to make an I hate Apple group/blog.

For idk345: I liked that you were very up front and didn’t add any extra details that we really didn’t really need to know. Maybe you could have said like 1 more sentence or described how the new ant was found.
For soccer123: I really liked that in some point you told us your strong opinion about this article. I thought there were a lot of great facts but you could have just read the article’s facts and reworded them (not saying you did.) So maybe you could have made it a little bit more than just facts.
For Milky Milk: I really liked the vocabulary that you chose to use because I just think it makes you sound smarter and the article more advanced. Maybe you could have made your questions more clear because some of them were just too broad.

Fishy start for low-fat ice-cream
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/5116506.stm

This article is about how a company has found that a protein from the pout fish lowers the fat needed in their ice cream. It says the reason that this protein lowers they fat needed is because it lowers the temperature when ice-crystals form which means less fat. Since the fish lives in very low temperature, It needs it to survive.
I really liked this article because it was about something I really like to eat and made me think about it in a different way. I was very surprised to see what American companies will do to make their product better. I would not like to eat that ice cream unless I didn’t know it had protein from a fish’s blood. I can’t believe that the U.S.A. has already approved of this so you might want to be careful if you are eating low fat ice cream. I’m still really interested if the ice cream is any good beside that fact that the ingredients aren’t so appetizing. I am still a little confused about how they get the protein from the fish, if they have to kill it first, and if and how they tell it apart and separate it from the other stuff in the blood.

Review for: idk345
I think your review to “Weird New Ant” is good, I liked how you said what you liked about the article, and you seemed very enthusiastic about it. I liked that you were talking about the new discovery that scientists have made. I liked that because it is a very interesting topic to read about... because it makes you want to know more and more about this newfound animal. One thing I would say you could work on would be, that I think a reader would like a bit more description of the article… like some facts about the animal, so that it is easier to understand what the discovery is about.

Overall, great job! ☺

Deadly by the Dozen: 12 Diseases Climate Change May Worsen

By David Biello

This article is about 12 diseases that will become more seen as the climate becomes warmer.

This article was very alarming. I was shocked to hear that if we don't do somthing now, not only will the planet be "sick" we will become sick, also. I relly liked this article. Iliked it because it was informing.

What intrested me about the article was that diseases are becoming more and more deadly. Also it seamed that all the diseases were thriving in third world contries. But what scared me the mos was that as the planet becomes warmer, the diseases get stronger.

I have many questions for the writer of this paper, and the scientists about this matter. First, willthese diseases get so strong, the vaccines will stop woking? Second, how are all of these diseases transmitted? And finally, how will I know if somone I know has one of these diseases? This article is very helpful ywt very scary.

Article - feathered dinosaurs
Author- unknown

Summary: The finding of dinosaur fossils with feathers in Mongolia , China means that dinosaurs may have evolved into birds.

Reflection:

I thought the article was interesting because I like dinosaurs and I am thinking about becoming a archeologist. I think it would be exciding to dig up a fossil twice the size of me! The thing that surprised me was the huge dinosaurs might have evolved in to birds. I learned that ash from a volcano could preserve not only the bones but also its delicate feathers. The article made me wonder if the birds in my backyard could be little dinosaurs. When I think of dinosaurs, they remind me about alligators not finches

THIS ARTICLE IS ABOUT new MIT car ( MIT MEANS Massachusetts Institute of Technology )is about to share cars that will be easier to drive into future cities. It will be a pollution free car.

THE Part I liked about the article is that it can be customised at anytime/will. I was surprised when they said that they want it to adapt to any enviorment it is put in. THEY ALSO SAID " a stackable, shareable, electric, two-passenger car.""magine a shopping cart - a vehicle that can stack - you can take the first vehicle out of a stack and off you go." There has also been other car expereriments like this there was one in EOURPE THE ZIPCAR AND FLEX CAR.

THE THING I WANT TO KNOW IS IF THEY WILL ACTUALLY MAKE THIS. THE THING I ALSO WANT TO KNOW IF THEY DO MAKE IT WHERE WILL IT BE FIRST SOLD. THAT WOULD BE A AWSOME CAR.

Article:Particle collider fires, no black holes form
By Voxant Newsroom

This article was about scientists in Switzerland starting up an experiment that may be able to make black holes that is so powerful that it would be able to suck up planets and even devour the Earth!!! 20 European countries and 80 nations came together to work on this 3.8 billion dollar project!
This really wasn't an article it was more like a video article. Which made reviewing it even more fun and more interesting!
I don't get why they are starting up an experiment that can possibly kill us all and ruin all the humanit had to offer! Hopefully this experiment won't be a waste and will go well and nothing will be harmed.

Review for Jooe is awseem:
As soon as I looked at your refection on “When Trees Grew In Antarctica,” I was very interested… because the topic was one that I have never even heard about, so that drew me in. Also, it was weird to think that there are trees growing in Antarctica, because, you would never think they would grow in that kind of climate, and setting. I had a couple questions after reading your review, I wonder how the trees grow, it there is ice and snow on the ground...? Also, if I’m correct, trees need soil to grow, and live, I wonder where the soil is under all the ice and snow…? One thing I would do differently… for you when you’re writing an article report is to add more detail, like I’m still a little confused about what these trees look like… and there similarities and differences from the trees here. Great job… such an interesting article ☺

Review for soccer123:
As soon as I saw the words “iphone” on your article, I was immediately drawn to it, in this day and age, the iphone is a new technology that people are crazy about. I agree and disagree with what the article is stating, yes there are already phones that have the same things as the iphone has, and yes some of them have been out even longer, but I think one of the reasons people are all over the iphone is its sleek, and hip appearance. Even though sometimes don’t admit it, appearance does sway what people do or don’t buy. I really liked that you chose this article, because the topic of whether or not people like the iphone is very controversial, which makes this article exciting to read. One thing I would work on is… to add more facts next time about WHY people like or dislike this new gadget. Good job !

I read an article in The Colorado Springs Gazette. It is written by Anslee Willett. It was about a middle school science class launching a model rocket creating sparks which eventually grew to burn about 10 acres of land.
I think the article was not very well written it didn't have much detail at all about what happened at the school. What surprised me about the article was that the school would let the class do something like that in a place that could have any possibility of burn anything. If I could ask Anslee Willett at least one question it would definitely ask who would let a class launch rockets somewhere that a fire could spread 10 acres before being put out. I'd also like to know if anyone at all was hurt.

Sleepwalking
Unknown author
http://www.emedicinehealth.com/sleepwalking/article_em.htm

This article was about a complicated state of mind that makes people walk and talk during their sleep. It also talks about the most common time of the night when people sleepwalk.

I thought this article was both useful and interesting. It’s useful because I sleepwalk sometimes, so this article helped me understand more about why I sleepwalk and if it will continue through adulthood. It was interesting to me because I enjoy learning about the human mind because it is so unpredictable and complex. In the article it says “Persons affected with this disorder usually have their eyes wide open in a stare.” This surprised me because I didn’t know that it was physically possible to sleep with your eyes open. I was also surprised when the article said that sleepwalking is genetic and can last through adulthood. I thought that sleepwalking only happened when you had something on your mind that was really bothering you. I would like to learn about how you can treat a person who sleepwalks, and how to prevent yourself from sleepwalking. I would also like to learn more about the genetic reason that people sleepwalk.

“Our Plastic World” (www.sciencenewsforkids.com)
At first, when I looked at this article, it scared me… this article is about how there are bad things in plastic that can cause health problems such as, cancer, birth defects, and focusing problems. If you think about it… There are so many things that we use everyday that are plastic. This is because plastic can take lots of different forms, and it is very cheap. I think this article was good, because I never knew that things that we use everyday could potentially be harming our long-term health. I wonder if there is an alternate material we could use other than plastic that is not putting ourselves in danger. If you think about how many things we have that are plastic. Its hard to picture life without it, so I think that scientists should find another material to start using, ASAP.
So, the next time you pick up a straw, telephone, pen, container, or MUCH more, think you could be putting your health in danger!

BBC news Student Team Wins Satellite Prize PURPLEMONKEY

A team of students from Shrewsbury school won a contest to design an experiment that would fly on a British-built satellite in 2010. Their winning entry was a small instrument called POISE, which measures variations in the ionosphere.
It was fascinating that 14-19 year old school students were able to design such a complex space device that could detect cosmic rays hitting the Earth’s atmosphere. I imagine that it would take a lab of scientists with years of space experience to do what these kids did. It struck me that the teacher that supervised this project was so dedicated to science that he raised $30,000 just so they could fly the experiment.
The POISE was 1kg, no bigger than a lunchbox and had a developmental budget of $100,000! It can give extensive feed back on when earthquakes occur which could prevent many deaths.
I found the article intriguing even though they left out some details. I wish it described the event of the contest in more depth. I liked the article because it showed that kids are acknowledged for great scientific strides.
I have some questions about this article. I would have liked if the article included more about the POISE creators. One question that’s bugging me is how did they know so much to construct it? Are they regular science students or genius collage advanced science prodigies? Also I wished they mentioned specific details about what went on in the contest, where it was held, and when.
I would want to know more about the benefits of knowing when cosmic rays hit the atmosphere. Also, what was the reward for these brilliant teenagers?

One in 4 Mamals Threatened with Extintion, Group
Finds, by James Kanter New York Times Oct. 7, 2008

One in four mammals is in danger of extinction. This
crisis is due to habitat loss, hunting and climate change.
This was the bad news delivered in a report by the
International Union for Conservation of Nature at the
World Conservation Congress in Barcelona.

There are 188 mammals near extinction in this crisis.
One of these animals is the Iberian Lynx which has an
estimated population of 84 adults left. The Caspian
seal is another mammal in grave danger of extinction.
It’s population has declined 90 percent over the past
100 years due to hunting and destruction of it’s habitat.

What can be done to stop this crisis? We must think
before we act. Everytime we think of building new roads
or buildings we should think of the habitats that will be
destroyed in the process. We also need to restrict
hunting so that the animal populations can replenish
themselves. We also need to work very hard to slow
down global warming which affects the habitats of the
world’s animals.

I think you did really well connecting the article to yourself, and creating a mental picture for the readers. I think you could improve on your punctuation. At the end of your response you forgot a period. I also think that your summary could use a little work, but other than that you did really well.

Chrissybrown08: I think that the article you picked was really cool and astonishing. Who knew that it was even possible to create a black hole? I really liked your enthusiasm because it made your response more lively, creative, and interesting. As for how you can improve, I think that you should expand more about the topic and think more deeply about its meaning.

Elimanningrox: I think the article you picked was shocking and interesting. It shows how something so small can easily erupt into such a big issue. If I had read the article I probably would’ve asked the same questions that you did. I also would’ve asked about how much money it would cost to fix the damages. I think you were a little bit repetitive in your response. I think that if you thought about what you read a little bit more your response could go from good to great.

Tropical Rainforest and Mountain Species may be Threatened by Global Warming
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/10/081009143700.htm
Science Daily

This article is about how global warming is forcing tropical rain forest animals to move to higher heights.

I found this article very important. By reading this article I have learned that in all our rush we forgot about the rain forest animals. What we forgot is that the temperature is going up in the rain forest. Which is causing the animals to go to higher elevations. That is a big problem for the lowland animals because they can't go any higher.

How much I can say that there is a major pollution problem is that the earth was warm why can't it be now.
We're just helping it along.

It was a really interesting article. I thought it was cool how you picked something that people of all ages like to eat. I thought it was gross how fish blood from a pout fish lowers the fat in ice cream. EW! Talk about grossness! I agree with you when you said, “I would not like to eat that ice cream unless I didn’t know it had protein from a fish’s blood.” Actually I wouldn’t eat that ice cream any way. Your article made me think hard because of the fish substances in the ice cream. I was wondering if you only had a wonder or a wonder with a question. Good job Have a Great Day!

Deadly by the Dozen: 12 Diseases Climate Change May Worsen
By David Biello:
WOW! That was definitely a strong article you wrote. I was shocked (like you) that there are 12 different diseases because of the climate getting warmer. I was thinking maybe it’s because of global warming. Your questions made a lot of sense. Like how you said “First, willthese diseases get so strong, the vaccines will stop woking? Second, how are all of these diseases transmitted? And finally, how will I know if somone I know has one of these diseases?” It’s true how you said “This article is very helpful ywt very scary.” It is very scary article. Kr.td.23, I think you should have listed the 12 diseases the climate warmth has done to us.

Dragonology chapter one(refuting the sceptics)

Tony Stewart to answer one of your questions I think they have at least three Okapi’s in the Bronx Zoo, if you want to go and see them in person. Anyway, your article was very interesting. I like how you picked that article because I don’t think anyone would know were you got it, if you got it in a book or a website. I think you should’ve added more to your article. I also think you should’ve put more details and information. Other wise great job Tony Stewart!

Your article is really cool. A car that can run with no pollution is awesome and they should mass produce that.
A suggestion is not to capitalize all your words and use spell check.

I agree with you about how people could have such a strong opinion over a phone is outrageous, but what does this have to do with science?

To Tony Stewart:

Your article was cool and a learned a couple things, but it was hard to understand because some of the words were spelled wrong. My suggestion is to use spell check

I liked how you put a lot of detail in your work. You could improve by adding a little more of your opinion in your writing.
